Dear Wilmington Youth Hockey Community,

We are writing to you today to share with you a special event in it's final year, in memory of one of our beloved members of the Wilmington Youth Hockey Family - Tony Alonardo.

Prior to his untimely passing in 2015, Tony Alonardo had been an important member of the Wilmington Youth Hockey family for over a decade.  As a coach (often coaching two teams per season), Tony also volunteered his time on the Board of Directors, as well as on numerous evaluation and selection committees.  Whenever  ice time at the local arena did not meet the needs of the WYH players, he secured practice ice elsewhere.   Tony organized a summer skills program, and he was the proud recipient of the WYH "Chuck Barbaro Award".  This list goes on, as Tony spent thousands of hours improving the WYH program and having a positive effect on so many kids, and by instilling and sharing his love for the game of hockey.

After Tony died unexpectedly in 2015, a group of his friends wanted to continue Tony’s legacy of “What can I do? How can I help?", so they started the Annual TonyA5K walk/run to establish scholarships in Tony’s memory . True to the organizers' plans, this October 12th will be the 5th and final TonyA5K Race, with all the proceeds being earmarked to continue the scholarship in his name for years to come.

Nobody enjoyed winning more than Tony, but he also taught the kids that playing their hearts out every time they stepped on the ice was just as important. Unfortunately, Coach Tony never knew the profound and positive impact that he had on so many Wilmington kids when he was alive. After his death, Tony's wife Donna and his daughters, Sara and Michelle, heard from so many WYH parents and former players whom Tony had coached, and who gave countless examples of how Tony had impacted their lives-- not only teaching them the game of hockey but also teaching them valuable life lessons that they continue to hold dear.  Most of these stories were a testament to how Tony made his players feel--that each and every one of the was a valuable and important member of the team.

We invite all members of the Wilmington Youth Hockey family to attend the Final TonyA5K Race and see all of Tony's players, now adults, that still come every year to honor Coach Tony and to pay tribute to the positive impact that his time, effort and generosity continues to have on them. We will have a very special guest walking with us this year. Tony was an organ donor and one of his recipients will be crossing the Finish line with us for the last time!

Mini-Mites - Birth Years 2011 and younger

Start Date:  September 28, 2019

All Skaters/players must be registered with USA Hockey, the cost is $48.00 per player (see website for updated costs), this is not refundable, please Click Here for registration information.

Projected Ice Time:  Twice a week (with some exceptions, please stay current with Schedule on Website)

Saturday 7:00am to 7:50am (subject to change prior to the start of the season)
Sunday 1:30pm to 2:30pm (subject to change prior to the start of the season)
exceptions include additional cross ice local games and tournaments

Location: Ristuccia Arena, 190 Main Street, Wilmington, MA 01887

This program is an in-house, fun introduction to the game of hockey with an emphasis on skills: stops & starts, edgework, and puck handling.  There are typically two practices a week and as the season progresses, Saturday is dedicated to skill building and Sunday is dedicated to cross ice 3v3 scrimmaging.  Other potential opportunities during the season, depending on timing and availability, include local tournaments and half ice scrimmaging with neighboring programs.  Possible call-ups to mite travel team when players are needed based on coach recommendations.

Goals of this level:

Develop skating and puck control skills of the individual player
Introduce basic shooting and passing skills
Introduce goalie position
Introduce basic game play

Throughout the year, players will participate in a goalie rotation with WYH providing the equipment for the players to try the goalie position. During the cross ice scrimmages, all emphasis is put on going after the puck and not positional play.  During half ice or full ice scrimmages more emphasis will be put on positional play. The primary goal is to develop a solid foundation of skating and puck handling skills to build on in the upper levels of Wilmington Youth Hockey.

Participants should have skating experience
Ideally have completed a Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Program
Skaters are required to bring their own equipment:
Skates, Helmet, Stick, Elbow Pads, Shoulder Pads, Neck guard, Knee/Shin Pads, Pants, Socks, and Shirt
