Organizational Update - Covid-19

A MESSAGE FROM WYHA

We hope this email finds your family well during these challenging times. As we indicated last week, the WYHA Board of Directors continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation, and though the final stages of our 2019-20 season remain uncertain, we continue to look forward to the important work of preparing for our 2020-21 season.

To our understanding, Governor Baker's recent order closing certain workplaces and prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people has served to force the closure of all skating rinks in the Commonwealth until such time as the order is lifted.  We will continue to communicate with Valley League representatives, from time to time, in order to determine whether the League intends to offer a playoff tournament at some point prior to the Summer.  Of course, we do not anticipate getting a firm decision in that regard, until the Valley League has a better grasp on the duration of this health crisis, and when Massachusetts residents and businesses alike will be able to return our normal routines.  Rest assured, as soon as we receive any information, we will notify all of you.

Likewise, WYHA has not yet decided whether, and under what conditions, we will be able to resume an "on ice" tryout process for next year's team assignments.  During the coming weeks, as we are able to get a clearer picture on what to expect in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic and the normalization of arena operations, the Board will decide whether to explore additional "on ice" tryouts, or alternatively, to make player assignments based on coaches' evaluations, selection committee game and practice evaluations, and the limited "on ice" tryouts that took place earlier this month.  These decisions related to team assignments will be made by the Board of Directors, based in part on recommendations of the Executive Committee, and in light of milestone dates that WYHA will have to meet with respect to player registrations, tuition payments, Valley League registration requirements, and practice planning.

Certainly, WYHA is not unique with regard to the logistical challenges presented by the pandemic, but with the support of our coaches and parents, along with the enthusiasm of our players, the WYHA family is uniquely well positioned to meet these challenges.

As we spend the next several weeks "together from a distance", be assured that WYHA continues to forge ahead with plans to keep this terrific program moving forward.  The Board is unanimous in its commitment to spend whatever time and effort is necessary sustain a quality program for your sons and daughters, and in the coming weeks and months, the Board's decisions will be based on the health and safety of our players, the programmatic well being of our organization, and the fiscal health of the association--in that order.

We will update you with any important developments, and in the meantime, stay healthy while we all look forward to getting back on the ice.

WYHA Board of Directors
